The ceremony also marked the school’s first congregation which saw 42 students graduating, with Mr Rockson  Efisah John being adjudged the overall best student for the 2015/2016 academic year.

The university, which is accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) of the Ministry of Education and affiliated to the University of Cape Coast, was started six years ago.

Mission

In his keynote address, a former Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education, Dr Paul Effah, said the mission of the college was to respond to the educational and technical needs of society through the provision of an array of comprehensive programmes and services that facilitated teaching and promoted quality university education.

He said by providing the knowledge, skills and personal competences that would increase career opportunities for students, a good university education would serve as a link between school and work.

Mr Effah advised the graduates to diligently apply the skills and knowledge they had acquired in the world of work, urging them to be good ambassadors of the university by being  hardworking, disciplined and committed to whatever they did.

He reminded the new students that “You are here for a purpose, to acquire knowledge, skills and the right attitudes that would prepare you as future leaders”.

Reforms

Mr  Effah said the university had gone through a series of reforms to improve on academic and professional standards, and advised the students to make effective use of the library to improve themselves academically.

He acknowledged the role of private universities and university colleges that had helped to ease pressure on public universities by providing admission for more senior high school graduates who otherwise would not have had admission to public universities.

In his remarks, the overall best student, Mr John Efisah Rockson, underscored the relevance of education, stressing,  “Education holds the key to the success and development of individuals, communities and nations. That is why when it comes to matters affecting education in our country we must handle it objectively devoid of partisan politics.”

He commended the West End University College for being among the few that had taken the bold step to mount some science and technology programmes in computer science and nursing.
