Weaboman gets borehole

Residents of Weaboman, a fishing community in Accra, have been provided with a borehole which has the capacity to produce about 16,000 gallons of potable water a day.

The facility, which will benefit about 3,000 people, was funded by the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2012 elections, Madam Obuobia Darko Opoku.

Prior to the project, the residents of the community relied mainly on sea water to undertake their various activities because of the inconsistent supply of water from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

Madam Opoku also handed over five pieces street lighting equipment and 10 chairs to the Chief of Weaboman, Nii Nuno Yabo, in support of the development of the community.

Residents of the community expressed excitement and gratitude to Madam Opoku for the assistance.

Early on at Old Barrier, a locality near Weija in Accra, Madam Opoku inaugurated a new bridge that is expected to ease the movement of schoolchildren in the area.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Madam Opoku said the gesture was in fulfilment of a promise she made to the community some time ago.

According to her, the chief of Weaboman requested her to assist the community with potable water since the community was using untreated water for their daily chores and economic activities.

“I realised that if their condition was allowed to continue, the health of over 3,000 people at Weaboman would be in danger,” she said.

Madam Opoku said she had the intention to engage the Ghana Water Company Limited for a permanent solution to the water problem at Weaboman.

Chief shows appreciation

Nii Nuno Yabo, who received the water facility on behalf of the community, commended Madam Opoku for her effort to address the water problem.

According to him, access to potable water was the main challenge the people of Weaboman faced, adding that “now that we have this facility, the community will be at peace”.
