The system, with a capacity of producing 20,000 litres of water per day, is supposed to serve the Binaba Health Centre and neighbouring communities with their water needs.

At the inauguration of the water system, the Country Director of WaterAid, Mr Abdul Nashiru Mohammed, said the organisation would construct a modern toilet facility to be attached to the maternity ward of the Binaba Health Centre. The project, he said, was expected to cost GH¢136,150.76.

He said the water system and the new toilet to be built would contribute to improvements in healthcare services for newborns, as well as decrease maternal and neo-natal mortality at the health centre.

Binaba and Kusanaba water system

Mr Mohammed said in order not to put pressure on the hospital’s water system, WaterAid would provide a support of GH¢198,845.30 towards rehabilitation of the Binaba and Kusanaba Small Town Water system.

He said WaterAid was currently working in 12 communities in four districts of the Upper East Region, providing water and sanitary facilities to health and educational institutions.

The Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Dr Fuseine Adongo, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Zebilla Constituency, said there were so many communities in the district without access to potable water supply and sanitation facilities.

Water and sanitation facilities

Dr Adongo said the government was committed to providing water and sanitation facilities to the people and was as such assisting the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) to meet the demands of communities in need.

He commended WaterAid for taking action over the years to improve conditions in the district.

The Deputy Regional Minister tasked the management of the Binaba Health Centre to establish a committee and provide it with the mandate to manage and sustain the water system.
