The project, which is about 70 per cent complete, will improve the reliability and availability of water supply to residents of New Edubiase and its environs.

The people of New Edubiase have for the past five decades depended on one borehole in the community for their water needs. The borehole was drilled in 1960 and provides about 46,000 gallons of water a day.

That notwithstanding, there still remained a shortfall of more than 200,000 gallons in water supply.

The project is being funded by the World Bank under its Subsequent Year Investment Project (SYIP). The water project commenced in April 2011 and is being undertaken by Technofab Engineering Limited.

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, who briefed the press during a tour of the project site, said the community had outgrown the existing borehole facility and as such, there was the need to put up an improved water system for the people.

He said in spite of the addition of four boreholes drilled by the government for the community, it was still not enough to meet the needs of the people in view of the increasing population of New Edubiase.

He said when the project was completed; it would produce close to 500,000 gallons of water on a daily basis.

He said the water head capacity of the current water system was bigger than the community’s requirements explaining that the project was capable of serving the community until the year 2025.

At the moment, the maximum water production capacity for New Edubiase stands at 300,000 gallons daily.

The Acting Production Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited in the Ashanti Region, Mr Francis Kwesi Awotwe, said the main physical works on the project were completed, including fixing and laying of all pumps. He said he was hopeful that by the end of the year, “the New Edubiase community would enjoy continuous water supply.”
