Volta Regional NCCE launches Constitution Week

The Volta Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has launched its 2017 Constitution Week Celebration at Ho to create awareness on Constitutional issues. This year’s celebration is targeted at organising series of activities for the security agencies.

The launch was on the theme: ‘Restoring the Ghanaian identity: Our values, Our passion.’

Guest speaker

Speaking on the theme, a retired educationist, Mr Maxwell Gbakah, who was the guest speaker, called on security services to be vigilant and meticulous in their recruitment and enlistment processes.

That, he said, would ensure the recruitment of the right calibre of personnel to ensure principled enforcement of the country’s laws.

According to Mr Gbakah, the intensification of basic socialisation processes by all agencies of education from the home, school, churches and the traditional leadership was crucial in the restoration of Ghanaian values and passions.

Addressing the theme, he called for an attitudinal change towards the use of state resources and the institution of a scheme to reward excellence at all levels.

Values to the dogs

Mr Gbakah pointed out that for the nation to achieve its goals, there was the need for unity and pride in its cultural diversity, while keeping the Ghanaian identity intact.
“Changing trends are inevitable but as a nation we must be proud of our identity, values and be passionate about them,” he stressed.

The retired educationist was unhappy that the priceless Ghanaian identity was gradually giving way to a pseudo-identity such as glorifying foreign music, names, beliefs and mannerisms, with rising levels of corruption, intolerance, vandalism, arrogance and opulence.

He attributed those to materialism and unhealthy competition among the people, saying that “life is an examination in which everyone has a different question; but many people fail at it because they try to copy others.”

National culture

The Volta Regional Director of the Centre for National Culture (CNC), Mr Emmanuel Quao, who represented the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, said it was time to restore the Ghanaian value systems that was based on collective responsibility.

He stressed the need to focus on positive values that had brought the nation that far and refrain from acts that impeded national growth and development.

The Volta Regional Director of NCCE, Mr Kenneth Kponor, urged the participants to protect and defend the constitution at all times, especially against all forms of abuse and violations.

He disclosed that the NCCE as part of the Constitution Week Celebration had selected 1,000 schools in the region where it would organise this year’s Citizenship Week Celebration on the topic: ‘Restoring our Ghanaian values, the role of the Child, with focus on corruption in the Ghanaian society.’
