Victim identifies suspect as part of Kumasi robbery gang

 A suspect on the police wanted list has been identified as one of the gang of four robbers who robbed a bakery at Kenyasi, a suburb of Kumasi, and shot one of the workers in the arm.

According to the police, the victim identified the suspect, Tanko, an ex-convict, among pictures of some suspects shown to her as one of the people who robbed her bakery of GH¢13,500. 00 last Wednesday.

Briefing

Briefing journalists in Kumasi last Friday, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Osei Kwaku Ampofo Duku, said last Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at around 10p.m., a gang of four robbers wielding three AK-47 assault rifles and a pump action gun attacked the bakery and robbed the owner of the said amount.

He said without any provocation, the suspects shot 35-year-old Aba Kyei in the left arm and sped of in a car.

Aba is currently at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital receiving treatment.

According to the Deputy Regional Commander, when the pictures were shown to the owner of the bakery who had suffered three previous  robberies, she immediately identified Tanko as one of those who robbed her.

Tanko is said to be a member of one of the most dangerous robbery gangs operating in the region.

Background

Last week, the police declared 19 suspects as wanted men for their involvement in various crimes within the Kumasi Metropolis and its environs.

Among the wanted men were Tanko, an ex-convict, one Mutala, a dismissed policeman, and another suspect known only as Salou, whose group is considered to be the most dangerous as they shoot and kill their victims after robbing them.  They are all at large.

In a related development, the police have arrested four persons for possessing military accoutrements without lawful authority.

The four were suspected to be members of a criminal gang that used the military uniforms to commit crime.

Items retrieved from them included military body armour, a pair of military boot, one locally made pistol, a German military attire and two knives.

The suspects are Adu Gyamfi, also known as Ice, Roland Asirifi, Kofi Agyemang, aka Gibir, and Adu Sarfo, alias Kombian.

The four were arrested upon  a tip-off at Kronom and Kwadaso, both suburbs of Kumasi.

Mr Ampofo Duku said on Thursday, June 9, 2016, the police, acting on a tip-off, arrested Asirifi in his room at Kronom and when the room was searched, the police found the body armour, a set of military uniform, boots, the locally made pistol, two phones and  GH¢400.

He said when Asirifi’s phone was inspected, the police saw the picture of a foreign pistol on it, and when asked, he told the police that he took the picture of the pistol from Adu Gyamfi and led the police to arrest him as well.

According to the police, they conducted a search in Adu Gyamfi’s room and found a Samsung mobile phone, an iPhone, an axe and a hood.

Police investigation led to the arrest of  the two  other suspects,  Agyemang and Adu Sarfo.

The police said investigations were underway to link them to some of the crimes in the metropolis.
