The revived festival, which brought together sons and daughters of the area, also provided an opportunity for other sub-chiefs to come together and perform libation in remembrance of traditional leaders who had joined their ancestors.

Chief requests

Welcoming Mr Amissah-Arthur to the durbar grounds, the Paramount Chief of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Omanhene Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, thanked the government for the many development projects it had brought to the area.

He, however, called for a college of education to be established in the Amenfi West District to serve the interest of the youth who were interested in the teaching profession.

Omanhene Sekyim asked for a long-term relationship with the Vice-President which would be anchored on mutual interest to bring about the development of the area.

He further asked for the appropriate authorities to, as a matter of urgency, put speed humps on the asphalted roads to avoid speeding in order to safeguard the lives of pedestrians.

The omanhene asked the leadership of the political parties and their followers to conduct themselves well to protect national peace ahead of the election.

MP/Minister

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Amenfi East, Mr Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, spoke about the level of development the district had witnessed under the Mahama  administration, for which reason he asked the people for a renewed mandate in December.

He enumerated the development project as the extension of electricity to 85 communities, the construction of 200 boreholes to provide potable water to underserved communities, road improvement projects and the construction of flats for teachers.

Mr Oppong-Fosu assured the chiefs and people of further accelerated development should they grant President John Mahama and himself a second term.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, assured the people that the rehabilitation of the Manso-Bodie-Asankragua road was a priority to the government and would be tackled soon.

He also spoke about the ongoing asphalted town roads and the call by the chief for a technical school to replace the current one which was not effectively in use.

Vice-President

Mr Amissah-Arthur, who ended his campaign tour of the Western Region with his presence at the durbar, said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government was committed to rural development and pointed to the many ongoing infrastructural projects across the country.

He stated that the national cake would be distributed fairly to ensure that every part of the country had its share of development. For that to be realised, he called on the people to renew the mandate of President Mahama and the incumbant MP.

The Vice-President promised to relay the call by the chief to President Mahama to honour his promise with a visit to the area before the election.
