Vice-President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has deplored the myriad of chieftaincy disputes in the country, saying the government will not continue to invest in peacekeeping at the expense of infrastructural development.

Expressing concern over the issue which he said had hindered development in some parts of the country, he said the cost of conflict resolution at the expense of development projects was of great concern to the government and as such cautioned against conflicts.

Mr Amissah-Arthur expressed this concern when a delegation of chiefs from the Gonja Traditional Area called on him at the Flagstaff House yesterday to formally announce the passing of the Kpembewura, Abubakari Sulemana Nyen-Churo Ebore II.

The Kpembewura, who died on August 2, this year at 92, is expected to be buried in line with Islamic custom.

There will be a seven-day funeral for the late Kpembewura at Kpembe, near Salaga in the Northern Region.

The delegation was also at the Presidency to inform the Vice- President of the selection of a new successor to the late Kpembewura.

Invitation

It used the occasion to invite Mr Amissah-Arthur to the introduction of the new Kpembewura on August 21, 2016.

The Vice-President sympathised with the people of Gonjaland for the great loss and commended them for the smooth transition and asked other traditional areas to emulate their example.

He assured the delegation that the government would be fully represented at the funeral of the late chief.

The Spokesman for the delegation, Alhaji M.N.D. Jawula, the Lepowura, described the late Kpembewura as a unifier and diplomat.

He said the late chief was a great farmer and reconciler who ensured peaceful co-existence within the traditional area.

As custom demands, the delegation presented cola nuts to Mr Amissah-Arthur as a symbol of the official announcement of the passing of the Kpembewura to the government.
