The items which included toiletries, insecticide sprays, non-alcoholic beverages, bags of rice and diapers were donated by the National Women’s wing of the union as part of activities to mark their 11th anniversary celebration.

Presenting the items, the National Women’s Chairperson of the Union, Madam Joyce Amo-Ampofo, said the women’s wing decided to present the items to the inmates of the home for their upkeep and also to make them feel part of the society.

She said the NWC had the interest of people at heart and as a union they were working tirelessly to do more to help the needy in society.

Applause for workers

She applauded the workers of the home for their patience and love towards the children and for keeping the home very clean.

The Supervisor of the home, Madam Augustina Quainoo, who received the items, said the children depended on the benevolence of organisations such as UNICOF since they did not have parents to provide for their needs.

She said it was the second time that members of the union had visited the home, and thanked them for their kindness and promised that the items would be used for the intended purpose.

Madam Quainoo said the home lacked mattresses, which had resulted in three to four children sleeping on one student mattress.

She made a passionate appeal to the government to support the home to pay its electricity bills as it relied on donor agencies to buy power for use and added that the home had been provided with a prepaid meter which was very expensive to use.
