UNICEF discusses child development

Currently, one child in every four lives in poverty and 3,600 children die every year from diarrhoea-related diseases in Ghana. Additionally, one child in every three has a disability and is not in school because of one condition or another.

To promote the wellbeing and development of children in Ghana, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has held a meeting with prominent Ghanaian personalities who are partnering with the organisation to attain this objective.

The meeting was to introduce UNICEF’s new campaign, ‘Let’s Be Fair, Ghana”, which highlights how millions of children in Ghana are not reaching their full potential because of inequity.

Talented artistes

Talented artistes Kwame Tsikata (aka M.anifest) and Vera Hamenoo-Kpeda (aka MzVee) last week joined other prominent Ghanaian personalities, including blogger Ameyaw Debrah, journalist Francisca Kakra Forson and sports journalist Gary al-Smith, to learn about UNICEF’s call for greater equity for children in Ghana.

Meanwhile, singers Noella Wiyaala and Rebecca Acheampong (aka Becca) are also working to impact the lives of children.  M.anifest and MzVee have both taken proactive steps in their own way and style to advocate Ghana’s most vulnerable, spark conversations and drive change through their platforms in support of efforts to impact the lives of children.

“I’m happy to be working with UNICEF to make a change that matters. Advocating for children is not just important, it’s crucial because children are our foundation,” M.anifest remarked at the start of the meeting.

“When we collaborate, we do better and go much further and we are excited to have even more like-minded partners with the dream of ensuring that Ghana’s future is secured. Let’s be fair to our children and adolescents, since they both have very specific needs,” the UNICEF Ghana Deputy Representative, Madam Rushnan Murtaza, remarked during the meeting.

Expression of passion

Blogger Ameyaw Debrah expressed his passion for engaging with UNICEF saying, “I think it is about time that I started contributing my bit to ensure that young people are positively affected and are supported to grow into respectable adults.”

All of the influential personalities at the event were encouraged to consider how they could play their role in providing a fairer society for every child in Ghana.

“I’m very big when it comes to supporting and inspiring girls. This is number one for me!”, MzVee shared her sentiments on the initiative.

The theme for this year’s campaign aims to highlight the growing lack of basic opportunities for over 3.6 million children across the country.
