UMat student wins award

A BSc minerals engineering graduate of the University of Mines and Technology UMaT at Tarkwa in the Western Region, Mr Dickson Adjei, is the pride winner of the maiden edition of the Falling Walls Lab Ghana competition, organised by the Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Accra.

The Falling Walls Lab competition is a challenging and inter-disciplinary platform that offers the opportunity for excellent academics and professionals to present their innovative ideas, research projects and social initiatives while a prestigious jury from science and business gives awards to the best participants.

For his prize, Mr Adjei, who presented a project work entitled, ‘‘Breaking the Wall of Mercury Pollution: The Latern Retort,’’ had a Brussels Airlines sponsored trip to Berlin, Germany to represent Ghana in the International Falling Walls Lab on November 8, 2016.

Two other students of the university placed third and fifth in the same competition.

Presentation

The Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Prof. Jerry S.Y. Kuma, who presented a certificate of the award at a short ceremony at the university to the winner, stated that it was as a result of the quality of the university’s programmes of study which continued to improve and impress year in year out as well as the devotion of duty by the staff that earned the student the award. 

‘‘This makes UMaTs graduates competitive, giving them the edge in the academic programmes they engage in with peers from other institutions of higher learning in similar disciplines, resulting in the laurels they win in the competitions they participated in,’’ the Vice Chancellor maintained.

Prof Kuma expressed his profound gratitude and appreciation to to Mr Adjei for making the school proud and encouraged him to work harder to win the ultimate competition when he represents Ghana in Brussels in November.
