Nayele Ametefeh

UK court decides Nayele’s fate today

The Ghanaian woman busted in the United Kingdom (UK) for carrying 12.5 kg of cocaine, Nayele Ametefeh, will know her fate at the Crown Court at Isleworth in the UK today.

Ametefeh, alias Ruby Adu-Gyamfi, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges when she appeared before the court via a video link from Her Majesty’s Prison, Bronzefield, on November 27, 2014.

The case, which did not last more than 10 minutes, was adjourned to today, January 5, 2014 for sentence to be pronounced by the court.

Ametefeh was arrested at the Heathrow International Airport on November 10, 2014 when she attempted to enter the UK with the cocaine in her hand luggage.

Charge

She was subsequently charged with Class A drug trafficking, put before the Uxbridge Magistrate Court on Thursday, November 11, 2014 and remanded in prison custody.

During the prosecution at the Crown Court where the case was later transferred, the court refrained from stating the exact quantity of the substance she was carrying due to ongoing forensic analysis of the substance.

According to the prosecution, led by Ravinder John, Ametefeh would get a minimum of 10 years, but if the substance is in excess of 10kg, she would get more.

He told the court that the accused person had told border patrol officers that she was in the UK “for shopping”.

Arrests

Ametefeh’s arrest and subsequent trial had repercussions in Ghana, leading to the arrest of 12 people in connection with the case.

They included two women, Nana Akua Amponsah and Sadalia Sandra Nuhu, both businesswomen, who travelled with Ametefeh but were believed to have abandoned her after she had been nabbed by the police in the UK.

The two were arrested on their return to Accra.

They were put before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly conspiring with Ametefeh to convey the drug to the UK.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charges but were remanded by the court before being granted bail subsequently.

Besides the two women, four others are before the court in connection with the case. They are Alhaji Mohammed Dawood, a businessman; Abiel Ashitey Armah, a Foreign Service officer; Ahmed Abubakar, a protocol officer, and Theophilus Kissi, a civil servant.

The board of directors of  the Narcotics Control Board was also dissolved in the heat of the cocaine scandal.
