Two mourners die in accident in E/Region

Two mourners, including a female specialist medical doctor, died instantly when their Toyota Fortuner vehicle on which they were travelling from Kumasi to Akyem Wenchi in the Eastern Region was rammed into by a commercial bus at a spot between Akyem Otwereso and Akyem Anyinase last Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Dr Patience Fleischer, 58, an Eye Specialist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, and Madam Philomena Kwayie, 59, a Matron at Kumasi South Hospital at Suntreso, a suburb of Kumasi.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Oda Government Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.

Injuries

Five other mourners, including a male medical officer who also sustained injuries, are also on admission at the hospital receiving treatment.

They are Dr Kwame Ofori Boadu, 40; William Larbi, 60, the driver of the vehicle with registration number GT 6284-14.

The rest are Jonas Akuffo, 32, the driver of the KIA Grandbird bus with registration number GT 492-15, his mate, Kwabena Sefah, and another man on board the bus, Gilbert Sarkodie.

Incident

Briefing the Daily Graphic at Oda, the Oda Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) Commander, DSP Albert Deletsa, said both vehicles were on their way from Kumasi to Akyem Wenchi to attend the funeral of the late Dr Kofi Asare, a former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who also died in a motor accident recently.

He said the KIA Grandbird, which was speeding, rammed into the rear of the private vehicle around 8 a.m., damaging the Fortuner in the process.

According to DSP Deletsa, it took fire personnel from Oda a hectic time before they could remove the deceased from the vehicle.

Referral

Due to the severity of the injuries to Dr Ofori Boadu and Jones Akuffo, the Medical Superintendent of the Oda Government Hospital, they were referred to the Emergency Accident Centre at KATH for specialist attention by Dr Kobena Wiredu who attended to them.

 

Meanwhile, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Nsiah Asare, has visited the injured persons at the Oda Government Hospital and wished them speedy recovery.
