Briefing the press yesterday, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Yussif Tanko, said on September 11, 2016, the police team on patrol intercepted a truck with registration number AS 3614-T which was loaded with illegally sawn timber with the suspect in full military uniform with the rank of Corporal, at Nfensi. He said Dwumfour identified himself to the police as a soldier who was serving as an escort.

Not a soldier

However, Mr Tanko said, through police interrogation, it was detected that he was not a soldier and was consequently arrested and sent to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. According to the police, while going through his phone, the police saw a picture of him and one Stephen Akplehe, a mechanic, also in full military attire with M16 assault rifle and pump action gun, together with a Chinese at a mining site. He said Akplehe who happened to beat the police station at the time was also arrested for illegal possession of military uniform.

According to the police, the two said the guns they used in the picture belonged to the Chinese miners who were stationed at Wassa Akropong in the Western Region.

Imposters

The police said they had in recent times received reports of people wearing security agency uniforms committing crimes and believed that the two could be part of the gang. The service is therefore appealing to the public, particularly those who have fallen victims to the acts of these men, to assist the police in their investigations.

The suspects are currently in police custody and would soon be processed for court.
