Two jailed 30 years for robbery

Two men were yesterday sentenced to a total of 30 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Accra Circuit Court for robbing a student of her two mobile phones and handbag at knife point at Musuku, near Accra.

Prince Adom and Yaw Fosu both pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery and were sentenced on their own plea.

The court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, jailed Adom and Fosu 15 years each for each count. All the sentences will run concurrently.

The two pleaded for leniency before the court passed the sentence and explained that they had bought new mobile phones for the victim.

In view of that, and the fact that some of the items stolen were retrieved, the presiding judge gave the two robbers the minimum sentence as prescribed by law for the offences they were charged with.

“Having considered all the mitigation factors, the court still has to give a sentence deterrent enough as prescribed by the law,” the presiding judge said.

Facts

Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patience Mario, said on September 29, 2016, the student went to visit her mother at Musuku, a suburb of Accra.

While she was walking towards her mother’s house, Fosu and Adom, who were riding a motorbike, attacked her at knife point and robbed her of her two mobile phones and handbag.

“The two robbers escaped with their booty, but on reaching Dome, they collided with a taxi cab. Despite the accident, Fosu and Adom escaped but the taxi driver raised an alarm,” the prosecutor said.

DSP Mario added that Fosu and Adom abandoned their motorbike and took to their heels but they were chased and arrested.
