Two die in Koforidua floods

Two persons lost their lives when a taxi in which they were travelling was submerged by flood last Saturday in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

The taxi driver was carrying four passengers from the central business area of Koforidua to the Daasebre Estates, a suburb of Koforidua when the incident happened.

One of the victims has been identified as Celestina Goka, a 60-year-old trader, while the name of the taxi driver was  given as Kofi Bafo aged 72.

The bodies of the victims have been deposited at the Koforidua Regional Hospital.

Calamity

According to an eyewitness, when the taxi got to Nkubem, the place was flooded and it was impossible for any car to cross, but the driver of the taxi with registration number GC2631-11 moved on.

The taxi was said to have stopped midway in the floodwaters, but before the driver and the passengers could move out, the car was swept into a nearby drain.

 Celestina was said to have died instantly, while the driver who fell unconscious, died later at the hospital. The other three passengers were said to have been rescued by good Samaritans.

The flood hit areas such as Tanoso, Betom, Nsukwao, Nkubem and Highways, Zongo, the markets and lorry stations but the road stretching from the Pentecost Church and the Koforidua Clinic at Nkubem were worse.

Minister visits families 

The Eastern Regional Minister, Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, the Eastern Regional NADMO Coordinator, Mr Ransford Boakye and the New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive and other dignitaries have visited the families of the deceased to commiserate with them.
