Two charged for robbing mobile money operator

Two men are before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly robbing a mobile money operator of her items, valued at GH¢ 6,856, at gunpoint. The incident is said to have happened at Awutu Bereku in the Central Region.

Mohammed Salifu and Johnson Weduwa are alleged to have used an AK47 assault rifle to attack the shop owner who retails mobile phone recharge cards and engages in mobile money transfer.

They were, however, reported to have been chased by a mob and subjected to severe beatings.

Due to injuries sustained from the beatings, only Salifu could make it to court as Weduwa is still receiving treatment in hospital.

The two have been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

Salifu pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared in court.

The rifle and ammunitions allegedly used by the two accused were brought to court by the prosecution.

The court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, adjourned the case to March 14, 2017.

Prosecution officer, Chief Inspector Ofori Amanfo, told the court that on February 20, 2017, Salifu and Weduwa, armed with an AK 47 rifle with 20 rounds of ammunition, went to Awutu Breku from Accra with the intention to rob.

He said they arrived at Awutu Breku on a motorbike and parked in front of the mobile money shop.

“Salifu entered the shop to transact business, but he quickly went back to fetch the weapon concealed in a bag.

“He then went back and held the shop attendants hostage. Weduwa followed up and started stealing items in the shop,’’ the prosecutor said.

According to C/Insp Amanfo, after the operation, the two men went out of the shop and made an attempt to escape on their motorbike.

“But the shop attendants went out and raised an alarm. A mob then chased Salifu and Weduwu and arrested them,’’ he added.
