Police arrest 2 for possessing 500 rounds ammunition

The police have arrested two persons at Agbogbloshie in Accra for allegedly possessing 500 rounds of ammunition.

The suspects were identified as Imoro Abdul Wahab, 25, a scrap dealer, and Kweku Amankwah, 58, a registered arms dealer.

Briefing journalists in Accra, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Efia Tenge, said the two were arrested based on a tip-off.

She said at about 2:30 p.m. on April 18, 2017, the police on duty at Agbogbloshie, with the assistance of some members of the public, embarked on an operation which led to the arrest of Wahab, who was keeping the ammunition.

Mrs Tenge said the police counted 250 rounds of BB cartridges and 250 rounds of AA cartridges.

Accomplice

Wahab then led the police to apprehend his accomplice, Amankwah, at Arena, near Agbogbloshie.

During interrogation, Wahab was said to have told the police that he bought the ammunition from Amankwah at GH¢1,000.

Although the police said the intention for possessing the arms had not been established, they were poised to conduct thorough investigations into the matter.

Agbogbloshie incident

Last week, the police arrested two persons for possessing locally manufactured pistols and some ammunition at Agbogbloshie, following an outbreak of violence between two ethnic groups.

The two persons, identified as Yakubu Sulemana, 34, and Alhassan Zakaria,19, both scrap dealers, have since been arraigned before court.

The violence resulted in the death of one person, and it took a joint police and military intervention to restore calm in the community.

Some persons who were injured during the clashes, including a pregnant woman, are currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital, while four others have been treated and discharged.

Mrs Tenge said the police were still patrolling the area and promoting dialogue between the feuding factions with the immense support of the leaders of the various sub groups in the area.

Warning

Mrs Tenge advised the public not to take advantage of the recent incident at Agbogbloshie to transact illegal business in ammunitions, arms or any other implements which could be used to destabilise the peace of the community.

The police, she said, would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any such persons to face the full rigours of the law.
