The support, according to the oil companies, is to help improve care delivery and create sustainable incomes for the upkeep of the inmates of the homes of Twin-City Special School in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis and Egyam Children's Home in the Ahanta West District.

Rehabilitation

The HSE teams of Tullow Ghana and TechnipFMC Ghana refurbished the bathrooms, toilets and dormitories, changed netting, cold storage facility, as well as presented kitchen equipment and appliances to the Twin-City Special School Essipon.

The facility at the special school was with no mosquito nets at the windows, as the children were exposed to the army of mosquitoes hence a constant visit to the hospital with cases of malaria.

The toilet and other hygiene facilities which were not in any good shape, have been replaced to create the perfect ambiance for the children.

At Egyam Children's Home in the Ahanta West District, the two teams constructed a structure and the needed tools for the expansion of its poultry farm.

The projects which cost $10,000 was funded by the HSE fund of the two companies, resulting from gains made from meeting their health, safety and environment targets during the development of the Tweneboah, Enyenra and Ntome (TEN project).

According to Ms. Abigail Mensah, Compliance Communication Manager of TechnipFMC, the projects which were mainly to improve the sustainability of these institutions based on their needs analysis was to ensure that the projects had direct impact on the lives of the children in the homes.

She said at the Egyam Home the construction of the structure was to help improve the income levels of the home and also serve as a source of protein for the children.

Source of income

“The existing poultry farm serves as the main source of income for the home and an expansion was required to increase the income obtained from the poultry and that is exactly what we did and added some accessories.”

For her part, the Metropolitan Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mrs. Elizabeth Akuoko, who unveiled the plaque to outdoor the facility at the special school, urged the school to ensure that the equipment were well kept in order to increase its life span.

At the Twin City Special School, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Crescentia Efua Eduraa Bilson-Sai, said since the rehabilitation of the facility, there has been a significant reduction of malaria cases amongst the children.

She said with the provision of the new netting at the dormitories, the children could now sleep without any problem. “The kitchen equipment and appliances have also helped improve greatly the quality of food delivery to the children.”

She commended the Tullow and TechnipFMC HSE teams for the support and urged other companies to come to the aid of the children.

Mr. Daniel Payne, Director of the Egyam Home intimated that the expansion of the poultry farm will be greatly beneficial and that they would put it to good use to increase the income level of the home for the welfare of the children.

“They already had a small structure which could take only few birds at a time, therefore the expansion will ensure increase in the capacity to accommodate more birds. We get income from the sale of the eggs and sometimes the birds to the public and feed the children.” he said.

He expressed his profound gratitude to TechnipFMC Ghana and Tullow Ghana for responding to the call to support the needs of the home.
