Transport unions receive computers

The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) has presented computers and their accessories to four transport unions and associations in Accra as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The beneficiary institutions are the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Ghana Cooperative Transport Association (GCTA) and the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA).

The President of the GIA, Ivan Avereyireh said the presentation formed part of their corporate social responsibilities.

He announced that the GIA was to institute a national awards system for drivers in collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC).

Under the scheme, drivers who are members of the various transport unions in the country would be rewarded for safe driving.

 Record keeping

Mr Avereyireh acknowledged the immense contribution of transport unions and associations to the insurance industry and said the GIA was also considering sponsoring outstanding drivers outside the country to learn from the good practices of their foreign counterparts.

He observed that a fair assessment of the performance of the drivers could be made, depending on availability of data and proper record keeping by the transport unions.

The president therefore urged the beneficiary unions to put the computers to good use by recording important events such as the number of accidents their members got involved in throughout year and other such data.

Mr Avereyireh explained that the recent hike in motor premiums was intended to ensure that insurance companies were in healthy financial positions to pay genuine and realistic claims promptly.

 Benefits

The Executive Director of the NRSC, Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah, expressed concern about the lack of data at the secretariats of the various transport associations and unions and hoped that the computers would help improve their operations.

“The intervention will serve as an important input into the imminent ‘passenger manifest implementation’ programme proposed by the West Africa Road Safety Organisation (WARSO),” she said.

Mrs Obiri-Yeboah said the passenger manifest was justified by the need to ensure easy identification of road crash victims on inter-city trips in commercial vehicles, operating within the sub-region.

Member countries are to customise the passenger manifesto to suit peculiarities in different countries and a legislative frame work to precede its enforcement.

 Appreciation

The Chairman of the GRTCC, Bernard Amoabeng Peprah, said the world was moving into a digital age so the transport management sector could not afford to be left out.

He promised that the gadgets would be used effectively to minimise the data-related challenges in the Ghanaian transport industry.
