The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged Muslim communities across the country to throw their weight behind the government to help improve on their welfare.

According to him, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has the welfare of Muslims at heart, and that even though he (President) is not a Muslim, “he fights for Muslims as if he were one”.

Quoting from the Holy Q’uran, he cited the case of an uncle of the Prophet Mohammed who never believed in Islam but was of immense benefit to the prophet.

The Vice-President was addressing the second edition of the Ghana Muslim Achievers’ Awards in Accra last Friday.

The awards were instituted by some prominent members of the Islamic community to give due recognition to Muslims who have distinguished themselves in various facets of national and communal life.

Zongo Development Fund

Dr Bawumia recounted that when he told the President about the Zongo Development Fund, “he said ‘yes, let us do it’ and we have done it”.

He also mentioned his request to make Arabic Studies a subject at the junior and the senior high school levels, to which the Present had assented.

Dr Bawumia added that the President had also appointed a minister in charge of the development of inner cities and Zongo communities, a feat which he described as being indicative of the heart and intent of the President towards Muslims in general.

He, therefore, entreated Muslims to rally behind the President to help realise the laudable initiatives of the government for the accelerated development of the country.

Commendation

Dr Bawumia commended recipients of the various awards for their hard work and contributions to nation-building.

He said the awards had been put together by intellectuals and progressive persons who had seen the need to motivate and inspire Muslims to greater heights by recognising them.

The originators and implementers of the awards scheme, he said, were doing a great job for the Muslim community by recognising heroes from all walks of life.

“If we fail to recognise our heroes, then we are not worth dying for as a nation,” the Veep stressed.
