Teachers urged to have positive attitude towards profession

The Principal of the Ada College of Education (ADACOE), Mr Cephas Kwasi Bodakpui, has urged teacher trainees to have a positive attitude towards the teaching profession.

He said teaching was not only a calling but a profession that needed a positive attitude, as it directly dealt with the human mind, especially children at the basic level.

According to him, teachers contributed in moulding the character of children at their developmental stage, hence the need to have patience, passion, love and a positive attitude towards the profession.

Mr Bodakpui also reminded the students that the teaching profession was guided by ethics and a code of conduct and indicated that teachers who fell foul of the rules were dealt with without fear or favour.

The principal was speaking at a matriculation ceremony at the college, during which 328 fresh teacher trainees, made up of 179 males and 149 females, were formally admitted to the college to undergo the three-year Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) course.

The occasion was also used to inaugurate 14 committees of the college’s council and academic board.

Observations

Mr Bodakpui observed that most teachers were not committed to the profession, as a result of which they did not prepare lesson notes or used appropriate teaching methods.

He also mentioned absenteeism, abuse of pupils, including sexual harassment, and demand for extra reward for official assignments, while others engaged in trading activities to the detriment of pupils and students.

Advice

He advised the trainees to endeavour to live above reproach on completion of their courses, stating that “as you pass through the four walls of the college, you must also allow the college to pass through you to make you a complete professional teacher’’.

The Chairman of the College Council, Mr George Dugbatey, urged the matriculants to strive and blend academic work with moral values to prepare them well in their working lives.
