The suspect, Kofi Panyin, a driver, and his two friends allegedly hired the services of a taxi driver (name withheld) from Winneba in the Central Region to Opeikuma.

The two accomplices, who have been identified only as Power and Edem, are currently on the run.

Knife

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Kasoa District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Alfred Kuda, said the victim told the police that while they were on the way to Opeikuma, one of the suspects pulled out a knife from his pocket and ordered him (driver) to turn off the ignition of the car.

He said the victim was ordered to hand over the ignition key and step out of the taxi or be killed.

When the victim tried to resist, the three suspects pushed him out of the car, after which Panyin took over the steering wheel and sped off, with the two accomplices on board, Mr Kuda said.

Arrest

The victim, who was abandoned on the road, later filed a complaint at the Gomoa Budumburam Police Station.

While investigations were going on, the police received intelligence that the suspects had taken the taxi to Breman Asikuma in the Central Region, leading to Panyin’s arrest six days later.

Mr Kuda said when a search was conducted in Panyin’s room, the police found the victim’s driving licence and a woofer (loud speaker) which was in the taxi.

He said Panyin admitted the offence during interrogation and, in his caution statement to the police, agreed to lead them to arrest his accomplices.

However, he could not assist the police to arrest his accomplices, as the places he claimed to be their abode turned out to be false.
