‘Take keen interest in dental health of children’

A dentist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr Regina Levor, has advised parents to take keen interest in the dental health of their children, since it has great influence on their education and social life.

He explained that poor dental health, apart from leading to dental caries, could also affect their education, since such children felt shy to participate in class discussions or participate in social life, which in the long run affected them.

Dr Levor was speaking at a sensitisation and health screening exercise for pupils of the Esreso district assembly Basic School at Esreso in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.

The screening was undertaken by members of the Rotary Club of Kumasi-Nhyiaeso in collaboration with the Dental Department of KATH.

It was aimed at examining the teeth, gums and mouths of the children to look for signs of diseases or other problems associated with their dental health and find solution to them as part of their annual support to a community of their choice.

Records

After screening 220 children, more than half of them were identified with teeth cleaning challenges, whilst 28 teeth extractions were done, with 36 polishing and staling undertaken.

A total of 16 filling of teeth were also done, while 10 were referred to the KATH for further examination and treatment.

Dr Levor attributed most of the challenges to lack of interest in the protection and management of their teeth which could lead to multiplicity of dental challenges with time. She appealed to people to ensure that they brush their teeth twice daily to save them form more dental problems.

She appealed to parents to buy only            toothpaste with fluoride to enhance quality dental health of both children and adults.

The Bosomtwe District Director of Education, Madam Augustina Konadu Yiadom, said since dental caries could affect all, people should take the issue of dental care seriously.

She enumerated the various effects associated with tooth decay and urged the children to brush their teeth properly always.

Appeal

The Headmistress of the school, Madam Yaa Abrafi Twumasi, lauded the Rotary Club for the sensitisation exercise which had brought great relief to teachers and pupils as well, and appealed for such exercises to be regular and extended to other schools across the country.

The President, Rotary Club of Kumasi-Nhyiaeso, Mr Thomas Okyere, pledged to continue to extend other needed services to  society and urged all to continue to be responsible in all their daily activities to ensure total development of society.

He cautioned people against all forms of  lifestyles that could affect their health in future or lead to other challenges that would need to be treated in future.
