‘Take advantage of govt’s support initiatives’

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has urged Ghanaian businesses, especially the private sector, to take advantage of the government’s support programmes to expand their operations.

In a speech read on her behalf by the Deputy Director of the Economic, Trade and Investment Bureau of the Ministry, Mrs Iva Denoo, at the 12th Ghana-Africa Business Awards ceremony in Accra, she said the government was making significant efforts to improve the business environment for private sector growth which would lead to job creation, especially for the youth.

“This is the right time for businesses to expand their operations, and I will urge the private sector, in particular, to take advantage of what the government has done,” Ms Botchwey said.

She also emphasised the need for Africa to tap its enormous trade and investment potentials through regional integration.

The awards

Organised by an events organisation company, Top Brass Ghana, with the endorsement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the awards recognised outstanding businesses that had contributed to the country’s economic development.

The annual awards scheme is part of activities to mark the African Union (AU) Day which climaxes on May 25 every year.

In all, seven companies were honoured for various roles they played in the economy.

They are Azar Chemical Industries; e-Process International SA; Gold Recovery Ghana; Golden Dragon Casino Ghana; Golden Tulip Accra Hotel; John Bitar & Company and Unilever Ghana.

The Director of Top Brass Ghana, Mr Isaac Dakwa, said the Ghana-Africa Business Awards Scheme had been instituted to honour enterprises “which make significant contributions to Ghana’s development through the promotion of trade, investment and other economic relations between Ghana and sister African countries”, based on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development’s (NEPAD) belief that Africa could accelerate its own development through increased economic exchanges among themselves.

Progress

For her part, the Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Zimbabwe, Ms Pavelyn Tendai Musaka, who graced the occasion, alluded to the great strides the AU was making on the political front, particularly in the maintenance of peace and security.

She, however, lamented that numerous political conflicts, acts of terrorism and cross-border insecurity remained a cause for concern in some parts of the continent.
