Taifa Burkina calm after brawl over woman

Calm has returned to Taifa Burkina, a suburb of Accra, after a brawl over a woman which resulted in the death of two young men last Thursday.

The incident, which was characterised by sporadic shooting and machete attacks, halted trading activities in the area as people abandoned their wares and ran for their lives.

One of the young men died from  gunshot wounds while the other was reported to have been lynched by a mob.

But the deployment of the police to the area has brought about an uneasy calm to the area as normal trading activities resume.

Residents are, however, still in a state of shock and yet to come to terms with what actually happened.

Most of them are, therefore, shying away from the media, probably because of the heavy police presence in the area.

Boutique lady

A 26-year-old Rastafarian, identified by the police as Gideon Ofosu, has already been arrested in connection with the incident.

Briefing the media, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP)

Osabarima Oware Pinkro III, said Fosu was accused by a certain man (name withheld) of having an affair with his girlfriend, who worked at a boutique.

Fosu denied the accusation, but was identified by a friend of the first  man as being the one having an affair with the lady.

The first man, the police commander said, attacked Fosu with a bottle, which infuriated him.

“Fosu drove home to Ashongman, picked a pump action gun loaded with five rounds of ammunition and rushed to the spot. But the man who

attacked him had left the scene,’’ he said.

Shooting incident

The Rastafarian, however, met the man, who identified him as the one having an affair with the lady.

“Fosu then fired a warning shot, when the man saw him, and attempted to escape. Some boys confronted him to disarm him, but he fired another warning shot, fled the scene and entered someone’s room,’’DCOP Prinko added.

According to the police commander, two men followed Fosu with one injuring him with a cutlass, a situation which led Fosu to fire continuously and flee to another house until the police arrived on the scene.

“Two dead bodies were picked by the police, one with gunshot wounds  and the other with multiple cutlass wounds,’’ he said.

The bodies, he said, had since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue.
