Supreme Court to determine voters' register credibility July 5

The Supreme Court has set aside July 5, 2016 to clarify it's earlier ruling ordering the Electoral Commission (EC) to expunge the voter's register of persons who used their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards to register in 2012.

The apex court will also determine in plain words whether the voters' register is credible or not for the upcoming elections.

The Court in May ordered the EC to expunge the register of persons who registered with their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards in 2012 following a suit by former youth organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan and one Evans Nimako.

The two however returned to the Court to seek clarifications on whether or not the court ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to delete names of persons who registered with National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards in 2012 from the national voters register.

The application stems from the confusion that has rocked different quarters on the import of the Supreme Court’s May 5, 2016 order.

Some are of the view the court did not explicitly state that the names of persons who registered with NHIS cards in 2012 should be deleted from the register and be allowed to register again after they have proven their eligibility, while others, including the applicants, insist the court made such an order.
