The Sunon Asogli Thermal Plant, which contributes 100 megawatts (MW) of power, representing 15 per cent of the country’s power needs, has been shut down for planned maintenance for the next 25 working days.

Meanwhile, gas supply to the plant is expected to be channelled into other plants such as the Mine Reserve plants to cover the shortfall until Asogli is back.

Overhaul

A source close to the company told the Daily Graphic in Sekondi/Takoradi yesterday that the shutdown of the plant had been scheduled for September this year but was rescheduled to November due to the crisis in the energy sector.

It said a group of Chinese engineers arrived in the country last Sunday to start work on putting the facility in top shape.

It explained that although the timing was not the best, the continued use of the plant without paying attention to its maintenance schedule could create problems for it.

Upon completion, it said, the plant would be positioned to deliver effective and efficient services.

The Sunon Asogli Thermal Plant, which runs solely on gas from Nigeria, has an installed capacity of 200MW and contributes 180MW of its installed capacity to the national grid.

The planned shutdown of the plant is to allow Sunon Asogli to overhaul its machines.
