Study Constitution as civic responsibility — NCCE Deputy Chairman

The Deputy Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in charge of Finance and Administration, Ms Kathy Addy, has called on Ghanaians, especially students, to study the Constitution as part of their civic responsibilities.

“As Ghanaians aspiring to assume positions in future, it is important for you to be well versed in the country’s Constitution to enable you to live up to expectation,” she stated.

Ms Addy was speaking to students from the Sunyani Technical University, the Catholic University College of Ghana, Fiapre and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who took part in the middle zone quiz organised by the NCCE in Sunyani.

The country has been zoned into three for the competition to test the knowledge of students of tertiary institutions on the 1992 Constitution as part of the 60th independence anniversary of Ghana.

Some of the areas in the Constitution covered during the competition were the Council of State, Citizenship, Territories of Ghana, Human Rights and Representation of the People.

Revival of civic clubs

Speaking to the Daily Graphic after the competition, Ms Addy said the NCCE had stepped up measures to encourage Ghanaians to read the Constitution.

She explained that while civic clubs in the various second-cycle schools were being revived, the NCCE had also targeted people within the informal sector for its educational programme on the Constitution.

“Our various social media platforms are also very active and we are interacting with many people on the Constitution,” she stated.

Ms Addy said even though the NCCE had been organising quizzes based on the Constitution among second-cycle schools, it now considered it prudent to test the knowledge of tertiary students on the various provisions in the document.

She encouraged students to adopt the culture of reading to enable them to be abreast of happenings around them.

Competition

At the end of the competition, the KNUST came first with 184 points, while the Catholic University College placed second with 108 points. The Sunyani Technical University placed third.

Ms Addy commended the participants for demonstrating their understanding of the various topics treated during the competition.

She announced that winners of the competition in the three zones would compete later to determine the overall winner.
