The staff were thus taken through medical examinations to test for levels of cholesterol in their blood, blood pressure, body mass index, diabetes, among other tests. They also underwent dental checks.

The health personnel who conducted the exercise were from the Legon Hospital in Accra and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

The exercise held last Friday was led  by Dr Samuel Kodzo Togbe from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Drugs were prescribed for those who needed them while others were advised on how to live healthy lifestyles.

Stress management

On stress, Dr Togbe said it was important that stress was reduced in the working environment, in order to avoid accidents.

He explained that managing stress involved managing one’s time, having enough rest, undergoing frequent medical check-ups and cultivating a good eating habit.

Dr Togbe advised the staff to stay away from alcohol as that also contributed to the build-up of stress.

“Stress is a psychological disease and it is even more dangerous than organic diseases. It leads to hypertension and hypertension could lead to heart attacks and stroke,” he added.

“A human being ought to be completely healthy socially, physically and psychologically,” Dr Togbe stressed.

Objective of exercise

The Corporate Affairs Manager of ABL, Mr Cyrus deGraft-Johnson, said the screening exercise, which is held annually, was undertaken to ensure that the workers were in good health to enable them to work effectively and at their maximum.

“An unhealthy human being cannot work effectively hence the need for the screening, diagnosis and counselling, in order that their performances are not affected,” he said.

The screening activity was voluntary and out of 489 staff members, over 150 of them made themselves available for screening.

Widal tests for typhoid fever and dental cleaning were also provided for those who participated in the exercise.
