St. Martin de Porres Hospital receives power generating plant
The Ghana Catholic Community at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Worcester, Massachusetts in the United States of America, has donated a power generating plant to the Agomanya Saint Martin de Porres Hospital in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.

The PramacGSW45 plant which cost GH¢84,000.00 was the group’s contribution, through fundraising, to help promote quality health delivery in the hospital.
The donors were represented in Ghana for the presentation by a three-member delegation led by the Director, African Ministry Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, Reverend Father Eric Asante, the Secretary, Mr Paul Awortwi- Mensah, and the Vice President of the group, Mr Raymond Osei Ansong.
Presenting the plant to management of the hospital at Agomanya, Mr Awortwi-Mensah said it had been the desire of members to come to the aid of any health facility in Ghana.
He said a number of hospitals were selected by the group but the lot fell on Saint Martin’s de Porres Hospital because of its location and peculiar needs.
70th Birthday gift
The Hospital Administrator, Mr Osei Owusu Bempah, described the donation as a “70th birthday gift” to the hospital.
He said the hospital which was established in 1946 by the late Bishop Oliver Bowers would be 70 years in October this year, and that the donation served as a remarkable event in connection with the anniversary because of the frequent power fluctuations which affected the hospital’s operations.
He noted that the hospital averagely recorded an attendance of 76,000 per year which he said put so much pressure on the facility with only one hardworking medical doctor and a committed employee.
‘’Currently, the hospital is rendering service on credit which puts stress on our suppliers which also affects both the hospital and our clients, but in spite of these challenges we shall continue to do our best to save lives, ’’ Mr Owusu-Bempah added.
The Director of the Catholic Health Services, Mr George Agyei, who received the items on behalf of the hospital’s management said he was very much touched by the group’s donation which would go a long way to assist in the delivery of quality health care.
He said as the population of clients in the hospitals increased, the National Catholic Diocese saw the need for further expansion of the facilities and called on other kind-hearted individuals, associations and institutions to help in that direction.
Mr Agyei assured the group that the donation would be put to judicious use.
The Diocesan Executive Secretary for Health of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, Mr Victus Kwaku Kpesese, who spoke on behalf of the Diocesan Bishop, said by the location of the Saint Martin’s Hospital, it was not well endowed and that the donation came at the right time to supply power to the hospital during continued power outages in the country.
The leader of the Massachusetts delegation, Rev. Fr. Eric Asante, gave a word of encouragement, using a scripture from the Bible in Matthew 25:35-36 which said “we should not always do things to benefit ourselves but rather think and consider what we should do to benefit others in need and by so doing we shall fulfil the law of Jesus Christ”.
The management of the hospital in appreciation for the presentation also presented the 70th anniversary cloth and T-shirts of the hospital to the donors as souvenir.
