Mr Dominic Owusu of Camelot Ghana who gave the advice said the business environment as of now was witnessing a competition between the telecoms and banking industry and hence all fresh graduates were looking for opportunities in this sector because of the assumption of quick financial gains.

However, he said opportunities existed outside of these two sectors and urged fresh graduates to move away from the idea of making quick money and try to find jobs that do not necessary match the course they studied in school.

Mr Owusu, who was speaking at a career fair for more than 200 fresh graduates said, “There is more to it than financial expectations. The future is not about the course one studies but the satisfaction one finds and value it adds to one’s life.”

“Graduates must know that with the financial expectations come more responsibilities which require a lot of innovations, discipline and diligence which sadly is lacking in many graduates,” he said.

He explained there were unemployment issues because many employers were finding it difficult to expand due to the continuous economic depreciation of the cedi which is making it difficult for companies to expand, therefore making it difficult to employ more.

The career fair was organised by the Skills Resource Network (SRN), a non-profit organisation with the aim to providing the fresh graduates with training to prepare them for the world of work. It was a collaboration between the SRN and the Ghana Institute of Consulting.

Ms Tracie Annan, the Programme Coordinator and a training consultant at the Ghana Institute of Consulting said the objective of the event was to expose graduates to the availability of employment and also to link them to job opportunities and other exposures of the business world.

According to her, the key objective of SRN was to support the government in its drive to reduce the level of unemployment among the youth.

She explained that SRN trains students and graduates and provides them with professional, marketable and practical skills to boost their competencies as well as make them employable in any part of the world.

“What we seek to do is to create value-adding career development opportunities for skilled individuals”, she added.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mrs Habiba Twumasi-Sarpong, Mr Klaud von Backustein of EIB Network, Gabriel Dela of Esolution Consulting and Group Captain S.K. Fianya of Ghana Armed Force took turns to stress on the importance for graduates to pay attention to mentorship, personal development, principles, attitude, education and talent in their pursuit of a job opportunities.
