Sherigu residents protest lack of devt

Scores of residents of Sherigu, a suburb of the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East Region, last Tuesday took to the streets to register their displeasure over what they described as "the lack of basic social amenities and the deplorable road network in the area."

They further expressed regret that for many years, successive governments had neglected the community to the extent that there is no electricity, good roads and educational facilities in the area.

The placard-bearing residents complained that 18 communities in the Sherigu area had no electricity supply. They include Kembisi, Zuribisi, Kumperigo, Agondui, Nyorkor, Akulidoone, Sapio, Tinganebisi, Kunkua, Kariyasi and Avogeribisi.

Some of the placards read: "No electricity no vote",  "No construction of roads no vote", and "No development in Sherigu no vote".

Demands

Later, a member of the community, Mr Anthony Asakisangoa, who acted as the spokesman, entreated the government "not to deny the people of Bolga-Sherigu their fair share of the national cake in the distribution of development projects".

He said the communities wanted to be connected to the national electricity grid as early as possible, the absence of which had caused it to be denied "the siting of the regional referral hospital, although about 100 hectares of land had been released for that purpose.”

He said the area currently served as the only location in Bolgatanga where refuse from the municipality is dumped.

Mr Asakisangoa also complained about rampant stealing at night, partly because of the lack of electricity, while some people had been taking advantage of the situation to sneak into the forest reserves to cut down trees.

Roads

On roads, he said several calls for the rehabilitation of the Bolgatanga-Sherigu road had gone unheeded, adding, "we are very disappointed at the way things are going because we have been neglected for far too long."

The Assembly Member for the Basingu Pumpumgo electoral area, Mr Francis Amoah, for his part, stressed the need for the issues raised by the community to be urgently addressed because they were legitimate.

Sherigu has a total population of 24,000 people who are predominantly farmers and traders.
