Septuagenarian commends government’s renewed interest in agriculture

He said the recruitment of 1,200 agriculture extension officers to provide technical know-how in farming and introduce farmers to new farming methods would motivate farmers to improve productivity.

Nana Adu said the initiative would also encourage many people to take active part in farming because of the promise it offered as a lucrative venture.

He observed that extension officers contributed greatly to high productivity in the cocoa industry, as well as in the output of food crops. “Many countries in the West have developed and continue to improve their economies because of the close attention they pay to agriculture,” he said.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Nana Adu, who is in the country on holidays, praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his decision to

invest more in agriculture. He stated that the decision, if implemented tactfully, would put the country's economy back on track. He also commended the passion of the Minister of Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, to ensure that the government’s flagship agriculture programme “Planting for food and jobs” was carried through successfully.

“I am hopeful that farmers in the country will become ignited by the renewed government interest in agriculture and will in turn work hard to make the country self sufficient in food and other agricultural produce,” he said.

Nana Adu disclosed that many Ghanaians in the United States had decided to get themselves involved in the country's current development efforts.
