The suspect, Francis Twumasi, who is stationed at the Castle Annex, was said to have shot the victim (name withheld) at close range after a misunderstanding ensued between the two.

The victim was rushed to Finney Hospital for treatment immediately after sustaining gunshot wounds, but Twumasi was reported to have followed him there to demand his release.

Some Residents of Ayigbe Town, who learnt of the incident relayed information to the Weija District Police Station, leading to his arrest.

The case has been transferred to the Accra Regional Police Command for further investigation.

Preliminary investigation

Briefing the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ms Effia Tenge, said the incident happened on Monday, December 15, this year.

She said the victim and two friends boarded a taxi at 8:30 p.m. from Kasoa to SCC Junction.

She said when they got to Ayigbe Town Junction, Twumasi, who was driving another vehicle from Mallam to Kasoa, decided to make an unauthorised U-turn, and almost collided with the victim and his friends in the taxi.

According to her, Twumasi ordered the taxi driver to go back to make way for him to pass, to which the driver complied without hesitation.

Not satisfied with the space left by the taxi driver, ASP Tenge said, Twumasi blew the horn of his vehicle to ask the taxi driver to reverse further, but the taxi driver declined this time because there was no further space behind him.

She said Twumasi got infuriated by the taxi driver’s attitude, got down from his pickup vehicle and walked straight to where the taxi was.

“He wanted to arrest the taxi driver but the three guys including the victim on board the taxi said they would not allow him to arrest the driver because he had done nothing wrong,” Ms Tenge said.

According to her, Twumasi, knowing that he could not arrest the taxi driver without the interference of the three others in the taxi, went straight into his car and pulled out a pistol.

Ms Tenge said the victim, in an attempt to cool the temper of Twumasi, was shot at a close range on the cheek.

“He fell down and was quickly rushed to Finney Hospital which was close to the scene. He was given treatment and conveyed to the Police Hospital,” she said.

Ms Tenge said the victim was transferred from the Police Hospital to the 37 Military Hospital to undergo surgery.
