The suspect, Joe Dzogope Anthony, 48, allegedly generated an identification card bearing his name with the said title with which he used to dupe people seeking to work at the hospital.

So far, the police have received complaints from 10 people who claimed they had been swindled by the suspect.

Findings

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Accra Central District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Richmond Bonsu, said preliminary investigations showed that Anthony, who traded in second-hand clothes in Nsawam, usually hung around the 37 Military Hospital where he offered to help people interested in enlisting into the GAF.

Anthony demanded various sums of money ranging from GH¢500 to GH¢1,800 from the victims to facilitate the enlistment process and for other items.

The commander said while some of the victims handed over the money to Anthony at the 37 Military Hospital and other vantage points at the request of the suspect, others claimed they paid the money via mobile money transfer to a mobile number registered in the name of Anthony’s wife whose identity has been withheld by the police.

According to police, the victims who had filed complaints, claimed they were defrauded between January 2015 and February 2016.

When Anthony failed to fulfil his promise, some of the victims went to look for him at the hospital but were told he did not work there.

One of them then decided to call Anthony on a different mobile phone number and pretended to be interested in enlisting into the GAF.

The suspect demanded GH¢1,800 and the two scheduled a meeting in Accra Central last Saturday.

The victim stuffed an envelop with pieces of paper to be presented to Anthony by a friend whilst he and his collleagues (victims) laid ambush.

When Anthony showed up at the scheduled place at about 2 p.m., he was arrested by the victims and handed over to the police.
