Scrap dealer arrested for allegedly killing pregnant girlfriend

A 28-year-old scrap dealer has been arrested, along with three accomplices, in connection with the death of his 20-year-old pregnant girlfriend whose body was dumped near a drain at Abossey Okai in Accra.

Kweku Baffoe, popularly known as Herbalist, together with two of the accomplices, Kabiru Ibrahim, 42, a spare parts dealer and Joseph Amarkwe, a 35-year-old waste collector, is said to have carried the body in a push truck and dumped it by the drain about 1 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2014.

The third accomplice, Innusah Iddi, 45, a drug store attendant, is being held for allegedly supplying a drug suspected to have been taken by the pregnant woman, leading to her death.

The body of the deceased, identified as Gifty Rita Agyeiwaa, was found in a decomposing state and wrapped in an old mattress and fastened with an elastic material near an open drainage system on Friday, November 14, 2014.

Agyeiwaa, who was unemployed, had been living with Baffoe for the past three years.

She was six months pregnant.

It was said that a young man who was collecting empty water sachets near the drain found the body, together with some garbage, including an old car seat cover, tyres, a woven cane basket and some polythene, about 6 a.m. on that day.

Body disposed of after three days

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Kaneshie District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Fleance Senam Adeka, said the four suspects were arrested on Saturday, November 22, 2014.

He said the police established, through their investigations, that although Agyeiwaa had died on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, “it was not until three days later that the body was dumped by the drain”.

Mr Adeka said the police were able to trace the suspects after the owner of the push truck used for conveying Agyeiwaa’s body from Baffoe’s residence to the drain had been identified.

“The owner of the truck told the police that Baffoe and Ibrahim rented his truck to cart rubbish on Thursday, November 13, 2014,” he said.

Girlfriend was sick

During interrogation, Baffoe told the police that on Saturday, November 8, 2014, he had returned from work to find his, ‘live-in’ girlfriend sick.

According to Mr Adeka, Baffoe said he contacted Iddi for some medicine and after taking the medicine, her condition got worse.

After two days, Iddi followed up to see how Agyeiwaa was doing, and on realising that her condition had worsened, he advised that she be taken to hospital.

“But the next day, Baffoe said he returned from work about 4 p.m. to find his girlfriend dead in his room,” Mr Adeka said.

He said Baffoe confided in Ibrahim and the two went on a drinking spree.

After they were drunk, Mr Adeka said they hatched a plan to dispose of the body by dumping it on a refuse dump.
