Schools not ready for inclusive education system

A Research conducted by the Greater Accra branch of the Ghana National Education Campaign (GNECC) has revealed that most schools are not ready for the inclusive education system with regard to  disabled children.

The research revealed that most of the schools had  inadequate infrastructure to admit disabled pupils. Classrooms were overcrowded and there was hardly any space to admit more pupils in wheel chairs.

The research also found that devices needed to enhance teaching and learning for those with disabilities such as vision impairment equipment had not been provided.

The research started from April to June 2014 in Osu Klottey, Madina, Ayawaso West, Ashiedu Keteke, Ga East and Adenta.

Government intervention

According to the Chairperson of  the Greater Accra GNECC, Ms Judith Sawyerr, the government has to do an extensive research and put all these measures in place.

She stated that funds had to be allocated for the implementation.

“The Government needs to put plans in place and budget for the implementation. Without these, disabled pupils will not benefit in any way from the inclusive education system,” she said.

She also said that most of the teachers they spoke to didn’t have any idea about how to handle pupils with disabilities because they were not trained in that respect.

Ms Sawyerr stated, however, that if the government decided to go on with its implementation, heads of schools and teachers would have to be trained extensively, especially in those schools that would initiate the inclusive education system.
