School heads urged to uphold principles of Presbyterianism

The Eastern Regional Manager of Presbyterian schools, Mrs Ivy Asantewaa Owusu, has urged heads of such schools to uphold discipline, hard work and integrity to ensure that the principles of Presbyterianism are not compromised.

She indicated that the Presbyterian principles of education were firmly rooted in the spirit of Protestantism which “upholds the centrality of the word of God, discipline, hard work, integrity, morality and upholding of democratic principles” and, therefore, must be inculcated in all children who passed through a Presbyterian institution.

The regional manager was addressing an annual review meeting of heads of Presbyterian schools in Koforidua.  She emphasised that the Presbyterian principles were in line with the code of conduct and education policy of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and were, therefore, very relevant to the cause of education in Ghana.

Heads cautioned

She cautioned heads of Presbyterian schools who refused to adhere to the Presbyterian principles and did things as they wanted to do the right thing to “bring back that famous Presbyterian discipline in the system.”

Mrs Owusu advised the heads to form learning communities in their various districts and areas to exchange and share ideas, compare notes and, above all, treat the children under their care as their own, stressing that education required key stakeholders to agree on principles that could sustain the delivery of quality education to attain positive outcomes.

She noted that the outcome of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) showed that the performance of some students had dwindled considerably over the years and urged the heads to put in efforts to identify the problems to plan how best they could be resolved for improved performance.
