The project, funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), under the component of schools under trees project, has brought relief to the pupils, who studied in a dilapidated building which exposed them to the vagaries of the weather.

Construction of the school building, which was initiated by the Chairman of the Gbawe-Mallam Muslim Development Committee, Alhaji Baba Shariff Abdulahi, began in 2011.

The GETFund released funds for 70 per cent of the cost of the project, with Alhaji  Shariff Abdulahi providing funds for the remaining 30 per cent.

The school, with a current population of 400 pupils, started in 2002 and was absorbed under the Islamic Education Unit  in 2009, with 98 pupils.

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, and the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development,  Alhaji Collins Dauda, jointly inaugurated the project last Thursday.

Relevance of the school block

In his address,  Alhaji Dauda said the building of the classroom block would facilitate teaching and learning in the school and shape the future of the pupils.

“I attach some importance to this event because it relates to the education of young ones who will take our place in society,” he said.

Alhaji Dauda tasked the opinion leaders and the assembly to furnish the school with the needed facilities to support the academic work of the pupils.

Alhaji Sheriff Abdulahi, who is a former Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said a conducive environment was a prerequisite for effective teaching and learning in schools.

Therefore, he said, the school block was to encourage the pupils to study hard and excel in internal and external examinations.

He lauded the late President John Evans Atta Mills for initiating the elimination of schools under trees project, and also thanked President John Dramani Mahama for continuing all the projects started by his predecessor.

The Head teacher of the school, Mr Usif Adams, said the improved infrastructure at the school would facilitate teaching and learning.
