‘Save Christians from false teachings’

Rev. Yaw Frimpong Manso, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, has expressed regret that many Christians are falling prey to false teachings for lack of knowledge of biblical truths.

He noted that there was too much of what had become motivational teachings explaining that “while motivating Christians to live holistic lives may be desirable in little dosages, it is dangerous for the future of Christianity when men and women of God major on these secular-inspired motivational messages to the almost total exclusion of the message of the cross which, alone, has the power onto salvation’’.

Rev. Frimpong Manso expressed these concerns in an exhortation to pastors at a meeting in Tema ahead of the Tema-Ashaiman gospel crusade scheduled for December 3 -6, 2015.

“The crusade is not only to win souls to Christ; it is also to save Christians themselves, especially the vulnerable, from strange doctrines and outright deception by false teachers, pastors and prophets”.

The Assemblies of God head turned attention to what he saw as an inordinate love for titles, both clerical and secular, complaining that while selfishly seeking to elevate the individual pastor or prophet, these titles did not necessarily add value to the quality of messages preached or demonstration of the power of God.

“They are merely self-aggrandising,” he charged, adding: “Why don’t we humble ourselves before God and man and focus on soul winning, the reason for our ordination and calling?”

Turning to what he termed “the competition to have the biggest and nicest cathedrals in town”, Rev. Frimpong Manso said “big church buildings are needed to contain the large numbers of converts won through hard working soul winners.

“My problem is when these things are done for show, with the same spirit that was at work in the people who were building the tower of Babel in bible times.

The motivation is wrong,” he said. He warned that “this is the same focus of the Christians in the medieval times who built large cathedrals and focused less on soul-winning.

“By the time they were aware, the cathedrals were being bought and taken over by investors for non-Christian uses.”
