Saltpond Government Hospital needs urgent renovation

The Saltpond Government Hospital is in critical need of renovation.  The hospital structures have developed cracks in several places which pose danger to both staff and patients.

Portions of the roof on several buildings are leaking profusely and that compels the hospital authorities to re-arrange the beds in the wards anytime it rained.

The small-size accident and emergency ward is also a worry to authorities of the hospital.

The Medical Superintendent of the Saltpond Hospital, Dr Derrick Akyeampong, expressed these concerns when the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Ekow Quansah Hayford, visited the facility.

The visit provided the MP the opportunity to acquaint himself with operations of the facility and the challenges it is facing.

 Built in 1920

The Saltpond Government Hospital was built in 1920 to serve the town and its environs.

Dr Akyeampong said he was not happy about delays in the payment of the claims by the National Health Insurance Authority, adding that the delay was affecting the operations of the hospital.

“We are constrained. We don’t have money for basic materials, drugs, gloves and cotton wool and this is affecting our work. All these items are necessary for our work,” he said.

He stated that the hospital did not have an ambulance to help ensure prompt evacuation of patients to referral centres and added that there was the need for staff to be accommodated in facilities on site as means of attracting and retaining them.

Continuous services

He said the facility continued to provide services with the limited resources that were available to it and called for support to enable it to improve on its service delivery.

The MP commended staff for their devotion to duty and promised to provide the hospital with an ambulance.
