Sallafest crowns Eid-ul- Fitr celebrations

A carnival to celebrate the end of a successful Ramadan was held in Nima, in Accra, to showcase the different aspects of the culture of northern Ghana.

The yearly event, dubbed, Sallafest, saw a procession of chiefs of the various northern ethnic groups in the country dressed in their traditional regalia with some riding on horsebacks.

They were followed closely by their subjects who sang their native songs and danced to traditional tunes while exhibiting their rich culture.

Young children, adults, and the elderly who could not join in the energetic performances, stood along the roadside cheering the performers and exchanging goodwill messages while some gave gifts and money to the less privileged.

The event is largely credited for bringing together thousands of Muslims across the Muslim communities in Accra on one platform.

Others

Many non-Muslims who were attracted to the carnival also danced to the tunes of popular Ghanaian songs while others took the opportunity to socialise.

Members of the various political parties also joined in the carnival, playing and dancing to their party songs to thank Allah for victories in the last year’s general election.

Traders were not left out, as they made good sales due to the large number of participants, who were ready to spend on friends, families and loved ones.

Comportment

Comparing this year’s celebration to that of last year, the Greater Accra Gromah Community Chief, Alhaji Suleimana, told the Daily Graphic that there had been improvement in the comportment of the youth.

He said the celebration would continue to be improved upon each year and urged Muslim youth to avoid immoral acts as that could bring the wrath of Allah on the society.

According to him, when the youth avail themselves to the good teachings of Allah and avoid immoral acts, they would be able to contribute positively to the society.
