Rotary provides water for Mangoase SHS

A US$70,000 water project has been inaugurated for the staff and students of the Mangoase Senior High School (MASS) in the Akuapem North Municipality in the Eastern Region.

The facility forms part of a comprehensive water and sanitation project embarked on by the Rotary Club of Accra-Osu, with funding from sister organisations in the United States, to solve the acute water challenge that confronts the school.

The water component of the project comprised two mechanised boreholes, a pump station and a 60cm-capacity distribution system made up of three water tanks.

Inaugurating

The project was handed over to the school last Thursday.

The event was attended by officials of the Rotary Club of Accra-Osu, the Akuapem North Municipal Education Directorate, opinion leaders and the governing board of the school.

Operations

The Eastern Regional Director of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Ing. Gilbert Amoah Ayamgah, conducted the officials around the project and explained the operations of the system to them.

It included the pump station from where the water is pumped to distribution tanks.

At the distribution station, Ing Ayamgah explained that the flow of water was by gravity and that the operation system was automated such that when the tanks got full, pumping stopped.

“This project is a two-stage one that requires a lot of electricity to function. This means it will come at a cost so there is the need to engage the Ghana Education Service (GES), parents and other stakeholders to find out how to bear the cost,” he said.

The President of Rotary Club of Accra-Osu, Mr Kofi Nti Ofori, said his club would take steps to complete the sanitation component of the project.

He also asked the school authorities to consult officials of the CWSA on any technical issues that might arose during the operations of the facility to ensure its long life span.

Maintenance

The Municipal Director of Education for Juaben, Mr Bartholomew Kwame Ofori, asked the school authorities to follow a routine maintenance culture to ensure that the system lasted and worked efficiently.

He also urged the stakeholders to step up efforts at completing the sanitation component of the project.

Academic work

The Chairman of the school’s governing board, Mr Ransford Tetteh, urged staff and students to take advantage of the facility to improve on their academic work.

He said it was only when they prioritised education that they would achieve their goals and be responsible leaders in future.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Sampson Agyiri-Nyako, expressed appreciation to their benefactors and said the execution of the project was timely since it would give both staff and students enough time for their academic work.
