It involved the replacement of plaster board ceilings with cornices, replacement of windows, rewiring, installation of air conditioning units, tiling, provision of toilets and painting of the building.

Significance

Unveiling a plaque to mark the service provided by the club in Accra yesterday, the District Governor (DG) of the Rotary International District (RID) 9102, Mr Sam Worentetu, said a good healthcare facility attracted users not only to the competence and professionalism of caregivers, but its infrastructure and equipment that helped in ensuring satisfactory service delivery.

He said the police were an integral and significant part of the community, for which reason the club lived up to its motto: “Doing good in the world,” to raise funds for the project.

Quality health care

In a speech read on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, he underscored the need for a world-class Police organisation to have access to a befitting medical facility to cater for its members.

He explained that the Police Hospital extended its services to the general public to help ease the stress patients go through in accessing health care.

“It does show clearly that policing is not just about law enforcement, but also includes our contribution to creating a healthy nation,” Mr Apeatu added.

Maternal deaths

He said the management of the hospital, through professionalism, helped to reduce maternal deaths from nine in 2015, to two cases in 2016.

Mr Asante-Apeatu said the refurbishment of the hospital would go a long way in achieving a zero maternal death rate at the end of 2017.

The IGP commended members of the club for their philanthropism and entreated other corporate bodies to also extend their social services to the hospital by renovating the labour ward and also providing a separate obstetrics and gynaecology theatre for the facility.

Rotary’s commitment

For her part, the President of the club, Mrs Ellen Obeng-Afoakwa, stated that the project was undertaken in line with Rotary’s commitment to promote maternal and child health in the communities.

“The renovation of the maternity unit was embarked upon specifically to address a basic human need, which includes excellent health care in a comfortable environment,” she said.

Mrs Obeng-Afoakwa was hopeful that staff at the ward would ensure the comfort of women in labour, adding that the club would also deepen its relationship with the police administration.
