Rotary Club embarks on blood donation campaign

The Rotary Club of Accra, Ring Road Central, has collected 1,200 units of blood from donors in five regions through a nationwide blood donation campaign to stock blood banks across the country.

Two hundred and sixty-five units of blood were collected from the Upper East, 232 units from the Upper West, 348 from the Northern, 209 from the Brong Ahafo and 146 units from the Ashanti Region.

The donation formed part of a campaign on the theme: “Give Blood, Save A Life.”  The exercise is being carried out in all 10 regional capitals in the country.

The campaign, which is expected to collect up to 2,000 units of blood, is being embarked upon by the Rotary Club and its sister organisations in collaboration with the Ghana National Blood Service.

The initiative began in October, 2016 and will end by early December next month.

Campaigns

The Service Projects Director of Rotary Club of Accra, Ring Road Central, Maame Kwaaba Stephens, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, said the three-month campaign sought to address the shortage of blood in the various hospitals in the country. She said apart from encouraging people to donate willingly towards a national cause, it also helped in sensitising the people to the club and its activities nationwide.

“The rotary year starts from July to June the following year. The Rotary Club of Accra, Ring Road Central, decided to partner its sister clubs and the National Blood Service which has affiliations in all the regions to carry out the donation exercise,” she said.

According to her, the campaign is being extended to the other regions, including the Central, Western, Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra.

Ms Stephens entreated the people to voluntarily donate blood to save lives rather than demanding incentives before embarking on the exercise.

“People have to understand that donating blood goes beyond getting incentives. The bigger gift is giving the opportunity to someone to live to see another day through your donation,” she said.

Rotary Club

Rotary, she explained, was a group made up of professionals who had come together to offer humanitarian services for the good of mankind. She said the group usually decided on a project and raised funds through internal and external sources to achieve its objectives.

She called on other corporate organisations to partner the club to carry out the exercise, adding, “Individuals who cannot even donate blood can support this project through other means and also by encouraging others to donate.”

An Assistant Governor of the Club, Mr Victor Yaw Asante, noted that Rotary was an association of volunteers who used their expertise to give back to society through humanitarian services.
