Rotary Club Accra Labone donates 50 wheelchairs to three organisations

The Rotary Club of Accra Labone (RCAL) led by its President, Lamtiig Apanga has donated 50 wheelchairs to three organisations in Accra.

The beneficiaries are, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, which had 30 chairs, the Korle Bu Polyclinic and the Ghana Society for the Physically Disabled which received 10 chairs each.

Presenting the items on Thursday morning at the Dean's Guest House of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Mr Apanga, said the donation is part of their "Wheels for Hope" project which aims to donate over 100 wheelchairs to health facilities in the country before the end of the year.

He said, "It is a common sight in our health facilities lately to struggle for a wheelchair to assist in the movement of a sick relative who is immobile and urgently requires the use of a wheelchair to enable him/her to get to the point of care within the hospital.

"You are usually left stranded, frustrated and helpless whilst the sick relative goes through pain when you find yourself in these circumstances. It is for this and many other reasons that the Rotary Club of Accra Labone as part of its projects for the Rotary year 2016/2017 has decided to embark on the wheelchair project among other projects for the year.

"Today marks a huge milestone in our agenda to mobilise a minimum of 100 wheelchairs to support health and allied institutions across the country under the project theme; Wheels for Hope".

Mr Apanga stated that the Rotary Club Accra Labone had received corporate support from Cnergy Ghana Limited which funded the cost of 20 of the chairs, Supra Pharma and G2 Medical Laboratory which funded 10 chairs respectively while the RCAL funded the remaining 10.

Representatives of the three organisations; Mustapha Salifu, the Head of Public Relations of the Korlebu Teaching Hospital, Alfred Quarshie, the Regional Secretary of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled and Dr Priscilla Vandyck-Sey of the Korlebu Polyclinic expressed gratitude to the donors and pledged to put the chairs to good use.
