The two officers, whose names were not readily known, are said to have made an attempt to stop a robbery operation at Las Palmas, a popular food joint at Lapaz.

In the process, the officers were shot. One of them, who was shot at a close range, died instantly, while the other is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.
The incident occurred a few metres away from the Lapaz main traffic light around 1 p.m.

Police report

A statement released by the police said the officer passed away at the Police Hospital while receiving treatment.

According to the statement, the two officers were on their usual motorbike routine patrol when the incident happened.

The suspects are said to have snatched an unregistered Hyundai Sonata and fled immediately after shooting the two officers.

At the time of filing the story, the police were pursuing them on the Mallam Junction road.

Eyewitness

According to an eyewitness report, the incident happened so fast that bystanders thought it was a movie.

"I thought it was a movie because of the manner in which it occurred," an eyewitness, Mr Eric Balm, said.

The suspects, he said, abandoned their motorbikes and snatched a Hyundai Sonata car from its driver in the full glare of the public.

"Everyone was running for their lives when a masked man pointed a gun at the face of the driver of the unregistered car on the N1 Highway," Mr Balm said.

The eyewitness said after the shooting incident, the armed robbers drove the Hyundai Sonata car towards Kasoa in the Central Region.
