Residents of Kwashieman receive free medical care

Residents of Kwashieman and its surrounding communities in Accra have benefited from a free medical outreach programme organised by Flokefama Company Limited, dealers in hospital and laboratory equipment, in partnership with the Accra-based Leostar Keep Fit Club.

The exercise, on the theme: "Championing healthy living through medical screening and exercise", formed part of this year's May Day celebrations.

Beneficiaries

More than 1,000 people benefited from the exercise, which focused on screening for all kinds of diseases, including malaria, hepatitis B, typhoid, syphilis, blood pressure and diabetes.

Earlier, beneficiaries had taken part in a health walk along some streets at Kwashieman.

Advice

The Medical Specialist in charge of the Lapaz Community Hospital, Dr Stephen Korang, said blood pressure (BP) had become one of the main causes of death and, therefore, entreated the public to go for regular check ups.

According to him, BP and diabetes were no respecter of age or person and advised the public to avoid unhealthy behaviours such as smoking and alcohol abuse and rather exercise a lot.

Corporate responsibility

The Managing Director of Flokefama Company, Mr Kenney Teye, said the screening exercise formed part of the company's corporate social responsibilities aimed at national growth.

He gave an assurance that the exercise would be organised annually to support the less privileged in society.
