The last deck was launched early Wednesday, March 4,20X4, bringing the progress of work done so far to about 70 per cent.

Driveway on the bridge

"What this means is that now vehicles can move on the bridge, but there is still some work to be done before the bridge is opened to traffic, hopefully in October," the Resident Engineer, Mr Victor Nyantakyi Baah, stated.

At about 6am, personnel of the construction firm, Messrs Bilfinger MCE GmbH of Austria were seen busily welding the last deck while Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) officials inspected the progress of work.

The rehabilitation work on the Adomi Bridge, which started in March, last year, is expected to be completed and handed over to the government in October this year.

Contract

The Project Manager, Dr Paul Herrmann, said his company was required to undertake three critical assignments on the bridge.

Under the contract, the construction firm is expected to change the bridge's deck; replace the hanger cables and apply corrosion protection paint on the arch, which spans about 805 feet and rises to its crown at about 219 feet.

Currently, nine pairs out of the 20 hanger cables have been completed and artisans were working on the 10th cable during the GHA officials' visit to the site.

A hanger cable is a type of cable which holds the deck of a bridge to the arch.

The 56-year-old bridge serves as a critical link between some parts of the Eastern Region and Juapong in the North Tongu District, Ho, Hohoe and other towns in the Volta Region.
